If you were shopping for electronics over the holidays – and most of us were – you probably know that 4K Ultra HD televisions were a hot ticket this year. Whether you already bought one for yourself or you’re about to, you may be asking – where’s the 4K content? Up until now, you had to rely on upscaling and a handful of 4K titles available on popular streaming services.
We’re pleased to say that Ultra HD Blu-ray is on the horizon, with Samsung announcing their first 4K Blu-ray player – the UBD-K8500.
4K Ultra HD Quality
It’s a no-brainer that the main attraction of UHD Blu-ray players is the full 4K resolution, and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs will deliver movies with four times the resolution of traditional Blu-rays. This model also plays your existing DVDs and 1080p Blu-ray discs in near UHD quality.
High Dynamic Range
Another intriguing feature of Ultra HD Blu-rays is the greater range of color and contrast afforded by HDR – or high dynamic range. Paired with an HDR-capable TV, the images produced will be more vivid and lifelike than you’ve ever seen before. We recently got a side-by-side demo of HDR in-store at a recent Technology Night event and the difference is truly stunning.
Smart Features
The UBD-K8500 comes with Wi-Fi built-in, and you’ll be able to access your favorite web and TV content from the leading streaming providers. With popular apps, games and movies at your fingertips, everything you love will be all in one place.
Theater-Quality Audio
Ultra HD Blu-rays carry the same studio-quality DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD soundtracks you’ve enjoyed for years on traditional Blu-rays. Pair the player with a capable home theater audio system and you’ll be fully immersed in your favorite movies.
But what about the discs?
While you can play your existing Blu-ray discs on the UBD-K8500, you’ll want to get 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs to get the full bang for your buck. Those titles are on their way, with retailers already taking pre-orders for titles like The Martian, Mad Max: Fury Road, Man of Steel, The Expendables 3 and others. It is expected that there will be 100 titles available this year as the format gains ground, with most of the major studios announcing titles in the pipeline for Spring and beyond.
